Obituary notes for Duane Charles Weller
Duane Charles Weller, 75, formerly of Bluffton, passed away at his home in Merced, Calif., on Sept. 10, 2006.

He was born in Bluffton on Feb. 1, 1931. He graduated from high school in Wadena in 1949 and entered the United States Air Force in 1952, going on to Officer Candidate School. He graduated from pilot training at Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, Texas in 1954 as a 2nd Lieutenant.

He flew numerous aircraft during his Air Force career including the B-25, B-47 and B-52. He served during the Vietnam War, earning various medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross. He retired from the Air Force in April 1973 at Castle Air Force Base with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

While stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas, he met and married his wife Eileen Franke in Rowena, Texas on Aug. 31, 1957. Together they had three children, Dennis, Julie and Pamela.

In July 1973, he established Weller's TV which he operated until 1997.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mercy/St. Patrick's Parish and a past member and president of Our Lady of Mercy School Parents Club. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 2384, serving two terms as Grand Knight, and a member of Our Lady of Mercy Assembly 4th Degree. An avid golfer, he belonged to Merced Golf and Country Club for many years until his health failed. His hobbies included woodworking, playing cards, and gardening, but his biggest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.

A funeral mass was held Sept. 12. Private burial will be held later at San Joaquin Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Eileen, of Merced; his son, Dennis, and wife, Erin, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter, Julie Rivard and husband, John, of Merced; daughter, Dr. Pamela Persak and husband, Bob, of Apple Valley; grandchildren, Ryan, Sean and McKenzie Weller of Colorado, Joshua and Jacob Rivard of Merced, and Max and Kate Persak of Minnesota; brothers, Donald Weller of Wadena, Kenneth Weller of Cross Lake, Arnold Weller of New York Mills, Joe Weller, of Ottertail; and sisters, Bernice Bretz of Osakis, and Arlene Kato of Great Falls, Mont., Isabelle Langer of Bluffton, Johanna Kato of Havre, Mont., Judy McLeod of Aberdeen, S.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Scholastica Weller.
