Norbert Mathias Heltemes, 86, of Bluffton died March 25, 2006, at his home after a long battle with cancer.

He was born Dec. 14, 1919, to Joseph and Margaret (Wegscheid) Heltemes in Bluffton. He married Patricia Ann Goldie on Oct. 23, 1951, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Bluffton. They worked the family farm, and he did carpentry work for 40 years before retiring. He was a member of the St. Johns Society, St. Johns Holy Family Catholic Aid, Bluffton Senior Citizens and the Bluffton Lions Club. He was known for his strong faith in God, his love of the Bluffton Community and the St. Johns Church family. He enjoyed playing cards, telling stories and visiting with friends and relatives. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his greatest pride.

Mass of Christian burial was at 11 a.m. March 29 in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Bluffton with the Rev. Albert Holmes and the Rev. Peter Kirchner officiating. Chaplain Bradley Skogen also participated. Casketbearers were Jerry Heltemes, Larry Heltemes, John Heltemes, Bill Heltemes, Joe Heltemes and Ray Buettner. Burial was in the St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery. Johnson Memorial Home of Wadena was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include four daughters, Susan of Silver Spring, Md., Carol of Wadena, Joann (Henry) Schornack of Staples and Linda of Brooklyn Park; three sisters, Lidwina Buettner of Wadena, Jeannette (Sylvester) Budig of Baraboo, Wis., Julie (Jack) Josephson of Little Falls; three brothers, Sylvester (Cecelia) of Wadena and Alvis (Eileen) and Richard (Coy), both of Castle Rock, Wash.; one sister-in-law, Joanne Heltemes of Hewitt; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on Feb. 18, 2002; and his brothers, Victor and Gilbert.

Memorials are requested to Lakewood Health System Hospice.
