Jerome G. “Jerry” Wegscheid, 72, of Wadena, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2008, at Tri-County Hospital in Wadena.

He was born to Alphonse and Theresa (Langer) Wegscheid on Oct. 11, 1935, in Bluffton. He married Nellie Hendrickx on June 17, 1958, at the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Perham. They made their home in Wadena for the past 50 years. He worked for Wadena Dairy Products as a lab tech from 1960-1969. He then went to work for Tri-County Hospital as the purchasing manager in 1969 where he worked until retiring in 2002. Since 2002 he has worked part time for the Johnson Memorial Home.

He was an active member of the community. He was a member of the Wadena Elks Lodge where he served as chaplain, and he was a past president of the Wadena Lions Club. He also served on the Wadena Fire Department for 22 years, the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Aid and was a member of the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Association board for 18 years. He received the Mike Downs Memorial award in 1984 and was inducted into the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986. He received the Cliff Birch Memorial Award in 1989, was the Elks Officer of the Year in 2002, and was the recipient of the Helen Keller Sight Award, the Melvin Jones Award and Lion of the Year in 2000 from the Wadena Lions Club.

He was passionate about amateur baseball. He enjoyed playing golf, reading, crossword puzzles, playing cards, yard work, telling stories, brightening a co-workers day, traveling, watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. He especially loved his time with his family, children and grandchildren.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 24, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Donald Wagner as celebrant. Burial will take place in the Calvary Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Duane and MaryLou Lien, Bernie and Therese Pavek, Duane and Vonnie Moore, Johnson Memorial Home staff, members of the Elks Lodge, Wadena Lions Club and the Wadena Fire Department. Active pallbearers will be members of the Minnesota State Amateur Baseball board, John Richter, Bob Zellman, Fred Roufs, Dennis Brennan, Tom Rademacher, Jim Fischer, Brian Larson, Marv Fiemeyer and Dave Hartmann. Arrangements were with the Johnson Memorial Home in Wadena (www.johnsonmemorialhome.com).

Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years, Nellie; daughters, Vicki (Chris) Singer of Detroit Lakes and Sally (Lyle) Wattermann of Savage; sons, Tim (Dianne) of Shorewood and Scott (Courtney) of Greeley, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; brothers, Marvin (Mary) of Bluffton, Vince (Vera) of Wadena and Bob (Barb) of Mankato; nieces, nephews, cousins and in laws; and his special soup maker, Marian Laust. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Greg; and sister, Dolores.
